Centre CATH Research Salon

This research salon is an open reading group for graduates and staff in which we read a text together, literally word by word out loud so as to study it closely.

No preparatory reading is expected and the process is a group exploration of a text that has had a major impact on cultural theory.

This semester we propose reading together: Henri Bergson (1859-1941), Matter and Memory: Essay on the relation of body and spirit (French: Matière et mémoire Essai sur la relation du corps à l’esprit), 1896

The text is easily available in book form or in a pdf that can be downloaded.

Useful reference for introduction: Elizabeth Grosz, Bergson, Deleuze and the Becoming of Unbecoming’, parallax 11:2 (2005), 4–13

The reading group will meet in Room G.11 in the School of Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural Studies, University Road.

If you are interested in attending, please book a place by emailing Professor Griselda Pollock, Director for Cultural Analysis, Theory and History: g.f.s.pollock@leeds.ac.uk Please include ‘Bergson’ in the subject heading of your email.

The next Research in the series will be Tuesday 7 November. See here for further details, including all dates and venue.
