Critical Conversations: Catherine Ferguson and Griselda Pollock

Catherine Ferguson - Nomads and Wayfarers

Catherine Ferguson, Lecturer in Fine Art, is a painter. She completed her PhD in Fine Art at Manchester Metropolitan University working as a painter and considering what Deleuze’s writing on Francis Bacon and Yves-Alain Bois’s notion, following Hugo Damisch, of painting as a model. She is specifically interested in the challenge of writing painting, not writing about painting or paintings.

Catherine will be in conversation with Griselda Pollock, art historian and curator, who has approached the issue of what is now called artwriting through the prism of an aesthetic theory arising from reflections on a painting practice by the artist Bracha Ettinger, recently shown in Frieze London and at the 14th Istanbul Biennial (2014).

This event is organised by the School of Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural Studies as part of our critical conversation series. It addresses the profound exchanges that characterise the School between thinking through making and thinking with making and thinking about making: all of which terms are up for debate.

The venue is Room 2.09 in the School of Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural Studies, University Road, University of Leeds. See here for a campus map.

The event is free and all are welcome.
