Discover ARTiculation Challenge 2018
The Discover ARTiculation Challenge has been designed to stimulate students’ interest and understanding of art while developing individual thinking, observation, research, language and presentation skills. The competition seeks to engage Key Stage 4 students, regardless of background or experience, with art and to develop their confidence and ability to express their opinions, thoughts and conclusions. It is organised by the University of Leeds alongside the partners, the Roche Court Educational Trust and the Devonshire Educational Trust.
For this year’s competition, Key Stage 4 students are invited to submit (via their school) a 2-3 minute film of themselves speaking about a work of art, an artefact or a piece of architecture of their choice. Judges from the School of Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural Studies, the Arts Educational Engagement Team and our partner galleries will view each film, looking at content, structure, delivery and the speaker’s original approach and unique potential before choosing entrants to go forward as finalists.
This year, schools may enter up to five films per school and the deadline for entries is Thursday 22 March. From these entries, between six to eight finalists will be invited to deliver their presentation to a live audience at the University of Leeds on 11 July 2018.
An information pack can be downloaded here. This contains information on how to apply, as well as a page entitled ‘Film Tips’ which has been put together by University IT specialists to help ensure your students’ films are good quality.
Previous finalists’ films can be viewed here, to give you a flavour of what we are looking for. Please note these are the extended presentations that the finalists delivered, not the initial 2-3 minute film.

Free print workshops led by final year BA Fine Art students
Students from the BA Fine Art course at the University of Leeds are offering a limited number of free printmaking workshops to schools in Leeds, aimed at Year 8 students.
The workshops will take place in May, in the classroom, and will last approximately one hour. They will be facilitated by a small group of final year students, in connection with their Degree Show.
The workshops will be offered on a first come, first served basis. See here for more information, including how to register your interest.
ARTiculation Discovery Days
ARTiculation Discovery Days are designed to engage Key Stage 4 and 5 students with visual art. At these free workshops students will discover how individual artworks act as a catalyst for wider critical thinking whilst working together using a range of sources (articles, letters and interviews) to explore ideas and carry out research. By the end of the day, students will present their findings to a panel of curators and academics.
The sessions are organised in partnership with the School of Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural Studies. The content of the sessions is relevant to English, art and history students. Contact ArtsOutreach@leeds.ac.uk for further information.
